Nick Ward Talks With SpartansWire After Homecoming Win Over Buckeyes

Spartan junior Nick Ward made a decision to wait another year before chasing his NBA dreams.

The manner in which Ward went about making that decision showed a maturity and a willingness to listen to people tell him things he may not have wanted to hear.

He was told that he needed to improve in a number of areas – footwork in the paint, full-game focus, conditioning, mid-range shooting accuracy, and defense.

He listened to the critiques.

He decided to come back for another season.

Today, in front of 16 members of his family and many more friends, the Gahanna, Ohio native scored 21 points, grabbed 7 rebounds, and had 3 blocks in helping to lead Michigan State to a huge 86-77 road victory over Ohio State that got the Spartans to a 13-2 overall record and an even more relevant 4-0 mark in the Big Ten.

Nick Ward is playing the best basketball of his career as a Spartan.

He’s working with his teammates in a way that suggests this team may be as well positioned as any of Tom Izzo’s recent squads to not just hang another Big Ten Championship banner in the Breslin Center rafters but to do a whole lot more when the calendar turns to March.

But if you listen to and look at Nick Ward talk about what it meant to have his family and friends – especially his mother – watch him perform today like he did, it’s hard to think that he’d ever be having this type of experience right now if he had chosen to head off to the NBA.

Ward is having a special season and today he shared an experience with his family and friends that they’ll all cherish forever.

Maybe the big man will put off the NBA for even another year if there are more special moments like these….

SpartansWire’s Chris Farmer caught up with Ward after the victory.
