For anyone of a certain age, Mark Montgomery isn’t just the head coach of the team that Michigan State will go up against this Saturday in the Breslin Center.

Mark Montgomery – in his eighth season as the head man at Northern Illinois – played point guard for Jud Heathcote from 1988 through 1992 and he played it exceptionally well.

Montgomery was a part of an era of the Jud Heathcote regime that won a Big Ten Championship and made runs at Michigan State’s first Final Four since the 1979 Magic-led National Championship.

Montgomery was a wiry floor general who ran Jud’s offense with precision and played lock-down defense with focus and discipline.

The 1989-1990 Big Ten Championship team Montgomery was a part of featured Spartan legend Steve Smith and probably would have reached the elusive second Final Four for Jud were it not for the dreaded clock and overall keystone cops oversight of Kenny Anderson’s last second heave that never should have counted for Georgia Tech in the 1990 Sweet Sixteen.

Michigan State won the title on the final Sunday of that 1989-1990 season in a classic, down-to-the-wire battle against Purdue that set off a wild celebration all over East Lansing.

Of course, Montgomery then went on to be one of Tom Izzo’s most dependable assistants from 2002 – 2011, a 9-year stretch that included three trips to the Final Four (2005, 2009, and 2010).

Here, we’ve found a beauty from 1989 when Jud took his gang to Bloomington to go up against The General and his Hoosiers.

Taking a look back at this broadcast is a whole lot of fun for a hundred reasons.

Do yourself a a favor and watch the first five or six minutes of this – you’ll be treated to Jud and Bobby Knight enjoying a nice chat since the two were great friends and then you’ll get a chance to see Mark Montgomery be introduced by the Assembly Hall public address announcer, Chuck Crabb, prior to the ball game.

Welcome back to East Lansing, Monty – some of us were fortunate enough to be pals with you and you’ve even remembered us when we’ve randomly bumped into you in O’Hare Airport.

You were, are, and always will be a great Spartan.
