Let’s start with the pretty damn relevant bona fides related to one of two linebackers that are a part of the 2018 Early National Signing Day batch of Michigan State commits, Marcel Lewis –

  • Defensive captain of the 2018 Detroit Free Press Dream Team.
  • Selected the 2018 MLive Detroit Dream Team Defensive Player of the Year.
  • Two-time first-team Associated Press All-State selection (Division 1-2).
  • Two-time Detroit Free Press and MLive Detroit Dream Team honoree.
  • Rated one of the top linebacker prospects in the state of Michigan by Rivals.com (No. 2), The Detroit News (No. 2) and 247Sports (No. 3).
  • Ranked among the top inside linebackers in the country by ESPN.com (No. 31), 247Sports (No. 32) and Rivals.com (No. 40).

I haven’t looked at how many stars Marcel Lewis was assigned by The Experts – but all of the stuff up in those bullets make me think that he’s a pretty good football player.

The thing that convinces me he’s a good football player is that Mark Dantonio gave the approval to offer this kid a scholarship.

And, those bullets up there – I see one area where he’s been named the #2 and the #3 linebacker in the state of Michigan.

That suggests he’s ready to step in and work towards being yet another fantastic Spartan linebacker.

Marcel Lewis is a 6’0″, 2010 pound linebacker and Mark Dantonio says this about him –

“Marcel Lewis is an excellent linebacker with playmaking skills. When you watch his highlight film, he’s a guy that can really get into the ground. Very explosive guy and a high impact player. He really runs well and hits with great shock. He was a two-time Dream Team player and a state champion his senior year. I think Marcel will have an opportunity to get on the field early in some capacity. I was extremely impressed with his film.”

Explosive, high impact player.

Coach D sees Lewis as a guy who can get on the field early.

What about comments from Mike Tressel (who, by the way, might be the most underrated assistant coach in the Dantonio Era)?

Here’s what Tressel, the chief of the Spartan defense, says about Lewis –

“Marcel plays the game like a ‘Spartan Dawg’ on defense: fast, physical and aggressive.”

I’ve looked for a cool video on the Twitter featuring Tressel screaming and yelling and acting like a maniac in his efforts to get his defense to play well but I can’t find one – he must not be as awesome as some other defensive coordinators who have cool mustaches.

Marcel Lewis, like Luke Fulton, appears to be a guy who will add his name to the very long list of linebackers who have played outstanding football at Michigan State.

Am I allowed to compare Lewis to Denicos Allen even though I don’t have my advanced degree in recruiting analysis?

Welcome to the Michigan State experience, Marcel – Spartan Nation is pulling for you and looking forward to seeing you punish opponents.
