Xavier Tillman Emerging As Reliable Weapon For Izzo

Michigan State big man Xavier Tillman is only a sophomore. He’s playing like a veteran who knows what’s needed at all times. Spartan fans should begin to expect big things from this big Spartan.

For some reason, it doesn’t seem possible to me that Michigan State’s Xavier Tillman is only a sophomore.

The way he navigates the floor, manages his game, and carries himself makes me think he has more maturity than any of the men who coach the teams in my son’s 11-year old park district basketball league.

Tillman is a 6’8″, 250 beast who sometimes looks and feels more like a 6’10” kind of a guy.

The Grand Rapids native is showing a whole lot in the early going of this 2018-19 season.

Over his last three games, Tillman has finished with these numbers:

  • At Louisville – 33 minutes, 5 of 8 from the floor, 13 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, 2 steals, 11 points.
  • At Rutgers – 30 minutes, 4 of 7 from the floor, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block, 11 points.
  • Vs Iowa – 18 minutes, 5 of 6 from the floor, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, 4 blocks, 14 points.

It’s fair to say that a lot was expected of Tillman when Izzo brought him in as a freshman a year ago.

But if these last three games are an indication of Tillman’s potential for the long haul of this season, Izzo will have a full-fledged, all-around weapon by the time the middle of the Big Ten grind arrives.

The thing about Tillman that might be most impressive so far is the way he’s doing everything.

He’s scoring, rebounding, playing tough low post defense, applying his size and blocking shots, and he’s handing out the ball with timely and smart assists.

This kid is only just getting started and sometimes it feels like I’m watching Andre Hutson as a senior when I watch Tillman.

The sky might be the limit for Xavier Tillman over the next couple of years.

For right now, Izzo and Spartan fans will certainly take the December, 2018 version of Tillman.

We’re keeping a close eye on the big man and happy to see that he’s starting to strut his stuff.
