Rest LJ For Another Week - It Will Pay Off For LJ And For MSU

LJ Scott hasn’t played for two straight games due to a lingering ankle injury sustained against Arizona State. If he needs one more week to get back to 100%, Michigan State should keep him off the field against Northwestern.

It’s safe to say that all Spartans think and wonder the same thing:

What happened to this monster?

It’s not fair to say that he’s been a full-on mystery or that he hasn’t carried the load or that he has “been a disappointment.”

He’s given the Spartan program a lot of effort, a lot of muscle, and a lot of power ever since he plowed his way across the goal line in the culmination of that epic drive against Iowa that ultimately sent Michigan State to the College Football Playoff back in 2015.

We all expect too much from these kids – especially when they find a way to explode with a moment like LJ did as a freshman that night in the Big Ten Championship game.

Still, it has always felt like LJ Scott could be LJ SCOTT in every game and on every possession.

There sure have been moments.

He’s electrified everyone with hurdles and more bulldozing.

But he has yet to hammer away in a way that recaptures the magic of that moment in Indianapolis that seemed to kick off what was going to be legendary career as a Spartan.

Maybe that run was the moment and everyone needs to just be grateful for it.

I still think there’s more to the story of LJ Scott as a Spartan.

Which is why we said this last week –

The injury that LJ sustained against Arizona State feels like the cold that I get every January that lingers into April.

Still, the Spartans have managed to get to 3-1, 1-0 while LJ has rested that ankle and worked on getting back to full strength.

With a huge game this Saturday in East Lansing against Northwestern presenting the Spartans with a chance to truly jumpstart this season, it would be great to have LJ at full strength in order to pound the ball when necessary, gobble up the clock, and get the ground game going in a way that everyone thinks it still can become.

However, it says right here that this Spartan team can probably afford to let LJ rest that ankle for one more week.

We’re taking this entire season in the most methodical of ways and that means that we’re not even referring to any games other than the one that’s next on the schedule.

Can Michigan State get the job done against Northwestern without LJ Scott out there?

La’Darius Jefferson, Connor Heyward, Weston Bridges, and Brian Lewerke should all be able to carry the football and find the yards necessary to win this game.

And this quote right here from Dave Warner, Michigan State’s offensive coordinator and running backs coach, seems to be in sync with what we’ve been saying –

“He’s a running back, and it’s different if he’s not able to be close to 100 percent, it’s tough for him to be LJ Scott. So when we feel like he is able to perform at a level that LJ is wanting to perform at, you’ll see him.”

Michigan State needs LJ Scott to be LJ SCOTT.

So, keep him on the sidelines for one more week.

The rest of the gang can take care of business this Saturday against Northwestern.

Once they do that, we can then talk about how LJ SCOTT needs to be LJ SCOTT on every play against whoever it is that’s coming up next on the schedule for Michigan State.
