On Urban Meyer, Ohio State - How About This Perspective?

Mark Dantonio was asked about his thoughts on the Urban Meyer/Ohio State situation. His answer provides Spartans with the right perspective.

The Urban Meyer circus drama has “concluded” with the announcement that the Buckeye boss will be suspended for three games after his lying, after the years of enabling Earl Bruce’s grandson, and after all of the weird dynamics related to everything associated with this entire mess.

The situation really hasn’t concluded, of course.

This whole thing will follow Urban Meyer – whether he and Ohio State fans want it to or not – forever.

It won’t follow him because Public Enemy #1 for Ohio State, Brett McMurphy, provided expert reporting on the entire thing.

It will follow Meyer because of his own decisions, his own actions, his own misguided loyalties, and his own behavior during that absurd press conference when Meyer struggled to simply read a statement and at least appear contrite.

But, at least a decision was made and everyone can move on to the business of the season that’s about to start.

Everyone has an opinion on how the whole thing was handled.

Good for everyone.

But yesterday as Michigan State concluded its preseason camp, Mark Dantonio was asked for his thoughts on the whole thing and his answer was refreshing.

Here’s what Dantonio said:

“I’m not here to comment on anyone else’s program. We’re just gonna focus on ourselves.”

There you have it.

Does that mean that SpartansWire won’t offer a thought here or there about programs other than Michigan State?

No – we will offer thoughts on other programs.

But for right now, as the Spartans prepare for what has the potential to be one of the most exciting and productive football seasons in the history of Michigan State University, we’re going to let Ohio State and everyone else handle and debate and opine on and on about everything related to all of that stuff.

We’re all too familiar with everyone offering scathing attacks on Michigan State and we recognize that many of the attacks have been justified and earned due to an inability on the part of Michigan State to address, handle, and rectify truly awful things that went on at MSU for the twenty years that Larry Nassar committed all those crimes.

And it’s been refreshing to see and feel that a lot of that has eased up as Michigan State works to continue its recovery from that terrible period in the university’s history.

So, we wish everyone at Ohio State the best of luck with the aftermath of whatever we’re supposed to call this entire episode that just dominated the world of college sports and beyond.

Dantonio’s right – he’s going to do what he’s done ever since he arrived and built this football program into the juggernaut that it’s become.

“I’m not here to comment on anyone else’s program. We’re just gonna focus on ourselves.”

Thank you.

Let’s follow his lead (as much as we can).
