If you’re looking for a carnival barker to be the face and leader of Michigan State University’s athletic director, you’ll be disappointed.

And, last time I checked, carnival barkers aren’t necessarily known for discipline, strategic sharpness, conviction, steadiness, a calming influence, and a commitment to integrity.

Bill Beekman himself says it: “I’m not the planet’s flashiest guy.”

You can even detect in the moment when he says this that he’s not comfortable talking about himself.

Here’s what Beekman is:

Smart.

Disciplined.

Accomplished.

Steady.

Hard working.

Committed to excellence.

Respected.

Knowledgable about all of the pros and cons related to the department he is now charged with leading.

It’s acceptable and even necessary for there to be skeptics who see Beekman’s appointment as a resistance to bringing in a completely new, fresh face and perspective after such a tumultuous time.

However, as Beekman himself has said, the Spartan Nation should let the results speak for themselves.

The sense here is that this steady, un-flashy, hard-working, even bookish Spartan is precisely what’s needed.

Michigan State has had enough flash, drama, and nonsense for the time being.

Time for the leadership of the Michigan State athletic department to roll up its sleeves, keep its head down, and do the hard work that is necessary to reshape and re-establish the credibility and integrity that has been damaged (and even lost from the perspective of so many).

Go get ’em, Beekman.
