46 Days Until Kickoff - 46 All Americans In Dantonio Era

Since Mark Dantonio took over as head coach in 2007, Michigan State has produced 46 All Americans.  That’s a lot of All Americans.

I’m not a mathematician but when I see that Michigan State has had forty six (46) All Americans during the Mark Dantonio Era, I can’t help but think that that seems like a lot of All Americans.

We’re making an assumption here that’s important to make clear – we are interpreting Michigan State’s accounting of the forty six (46) All Americans as reference to ALL All American levels that Spartans have earned.

In other words, a Third Team All American counts as part of the forty six (46) All Americans.

As it should.

If I apply myself, I might be able to figure out what sort of yearly average this translates to.

Let’s see…

Dantonio has been the head coach since the 2007 season.

That means he’s been the head coach for eleven (11) seasons.

And, in those eleven (11) seasons, the team has had forty six (46) players named to some sort of All American list.

If I apply a divisional approach to the situation, I’d use the numbers forty six (46) and eleven (11) and apply standard division.

The number that I come up with when I use my calculator is four point one eight (4.18).

That number – four point one eight (4.18) – represents the average number of Spartans that have been named All Americans during these sensational years with Dantonio at the helm.

I did a relatively decent search of other programs’ total of All Americans since 2007 and I came up with some interesting numbers (**Sources for these numbers ranged from media guides to various websites to the guy who’s sitting a few stools down from me in this bar where I am right now and my barber – and I’m acutely aware of the fact that this search may have some holes in it).

UMAA has had a total of twelve (12) All Americans since 2007.

Penn State has had eleven (11) All Americans since 2007.

Wisconsin has had thirty one (31) All Americans since 2007.

According to the statistics I found across Ohio State’s various websites, the Ohio State Wikipedia page, and my barber who knows a lot about college football and happens to be a die-hard Ohio State Buckeye fan, the Buckeyes have had twenty six (26) All Americans since 2007.

That Ohio State number, for some reason, feels like a low number.

But, I’m rock solid on being confident about the numbers for the other programs noted above.

Here’s what, I think, all will agree is the main point –

Forty six (46) All Americans over eleven (11) seasons – for an average of four point eight (4.18) All Americans each season – is one hell of a lot of All Americans.

Forty six (46) days until kickoff.

Forty six (46) All Americans in the eleven (11) years with Mark Dantonio as head coach.

That’s a crap load of All Americans, people.
