Think back to the pains of the disastrous 3-9 season of 2016.

Many people wanted to say – and plenty of people did say – that the fall that occurred in 2016 signified the end of the road for the Dantonio run.

I don’t think any Spartans would say that it was specifically good that the 3-9 season happened – but there’s an argument to be made that it forced the entire program, including the head man himself, to re-evaluate everything.

And then the 2017 season happened.

Within the 2017 season, remarkable victories over UMAA – in a game that Vegas experts said would be a simple win for UMAA as UMAA was, supposedly, putting the world back onto its proper axis – and Penn State, not to mention the thrashing of Washington State in the Holiday Bowl, demonstrated that all is fine and well along the banks of the Red Cedar River, thank you very much.

Things are so fine that Mark Dantonio is primed and ready to kick off what might be his finest hour yet as the head man in East Lansing.

Where do the smart guys at CollegeFootballNews.com have Coach D in the national rankings?

He might not come in at #1 – but we’ll gladly accept his placement in this fun, smart, credible, and fantastic breakdown….
