Spartan Marching Band - Oct 29, 1983 At Spartan Stadium

Great vintage film – pretty damn good quality too – with good audio of the Spartan Marching Band on October 29th, 1983 before and during the Spartans’ home clash with the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

It’s pretty incredible to hear and see how the Spartan Marching Band kicked ass in 1983.

It was George Perles’s first season as head coach in East Lansing and the Spartans finished the year with a mediocre 4-6-1 record as Perles got his rebuilding project off the ground.

But the Spartan Marching Band was cranking as it always has and it’s a gas to watch and listen to this sometimes grainy and sometimes wobbly film of the SMB in front of a packed house on what looked to be a gorgeous Autumn day along the banks of the Red Cedar River.

Particularly interesting is how consistent the Spartan Marching Band’s pregame performance is today with how is cranked in back when some of us were partial to The Love Boat, Mr Roboto by Styx, and Streisand’s brilliance in “Yentl.”

How about giving some props to the Michigan State Sports Information folks for the beautiful gameday program from that day, October 29th, 1983?

Looking at the cover of that gameday program almost makes me want to go to school at that gorgeous place….

And, here you have it – a fabulous film to accompany you at your desk while you pretend to do work.

Put your headphones on, keep an eye on Lumbergh out of the corner of your eye, and crank up the 1983 Spartan Marching Band.

You’ll be able to smell the beer-soaked stairs as you head down into Rick’s in your mind……

By the way – State beat the Gophers on this day 34-10.
