73 Days Until Kickoff - Nichol To Cunningham! (use of exclamation point to emphasize importance)

Nichol to Cunningham in 2010 Big Ten Championship Game remains among the most memorable moments of the Dantonio Era.

The first thing you need to do is just forget that the game ended up being one of the most crushing losses in the history of Spartan Football.

The 2010 Big Ten Championship was an epic prize fight that featured haymakers being exchanged between Michigan State and Wisconsin all night long.

One way to escape the bitterness of the defeat is to quickly remember that the 2013 Spartans would get back to the championship game, beat Ohio State, and go on to bring the Roses home to East Lansing in one of the all-time storybook seasons.

And, with the passage of time, we can all sit back and recognize what an amazing season 2010 was for the Spartans – and we can appreciate that the championship game had an all-timer of a play executed by two Spartan legends, Keith Nichol and BJ Cunningham.

With 10:30 still to go in the second quarter, Wisconsin held a 21-14 lead – but Michigan State was threatening to tie the game.

And then this happened:

And when that happened, I did some or all of the following things:

  • Spit out all of the beer that was in my mouth and sprayed it all over the TV screen and my adolescent children as I yelled my head off.
  • Threw a plate of bologna slices and pickles through the glass sliding door that leads out to the patio.
  • Tackled our just-finished and completely decorated Christmas tree to the ground as if I was Percy Snow and the tree was 1987 Illini quarterback Brian Menkhausen.
  • Tripped as I was tackling the Christmas tree and fell onto the ottoman, sustaining a gash above my left eye that probably should have called for stitches but I played on the rest of the game since it was the championship.
  • Clapped and waved my Michigan State pennant while whistling “Victory For MSU!”

@MSU_Football continues its 100-day countdown to kickoff with a great tribute to the magical play that was executed by these two Spartan studs, Cunningham and Nichol.

The two players – and the play itself – did so much to build the foundation that is stronger than ever all these years later…
