I’ve referred to my pedestrian mathematic skills before within the space of SpartansWire.

Today’s 78-day mark until the 2018 season kicks off gives me another chance to test my arithmetic.

@MSU_Football (we love you) provides us with yet another fantastic tidbit in its ongoing 100-day countdown to kickoff.

Today, we’re reminded of the fact that since 2010, Michigan State has won 78 games.

So, if I use my fingers and toes to do the counting and dividing and calculating, I think that the following can be recognized:

Since 2010, Michigan State has averaged 9.75 victories per season.

That covers an eight year span.

Let’s go ahead and round up the .75 and recognize that, for all intents and purposes, Michigan State has averaged 10 victories per season since 2010.

It’s even fair to acknowledge that this all includes a season (2016) when the Spartans won 3 football games.

By any measure, averaging 10 wins (okay, 9.75 wins) per season for eight straight seasons is extremely impressive and speaks to the strength, power, and consistency of a college football program.

But let’s extend the measurement so that we can look at what other college football programs can boast the same level of success over the same time frame.

Here is a sampling of the programs that most fans would consider to be the elite programs across the sport and their win totals since 2010 – you’ll see where Michigan State factors into the collection:

Alabama – 99

Florida State – 95

Ohio State – 94

Clemson – 88

Florida – 86

Stanford – 85

Oklahoma – 85

Oregon – 85

Wisconsin – 84

MICHIGAN STATE – 78

LSU – 78

Georgia – 77

TCU – 75

Southern California – 73

Auburn – 70

Notre Dame – 69

The average college football fan out there has no idea that Michigan State sits right alongside these programs.

The average college football program out there has no idea that Michigan State is in a position to climb even further up this ladder of elite programs this year and beyond.

But, the average Green & Whiter out there knows all of this and doesn’t care much about whether or not someone in Knoxville, Tennessee understands that the football program in East Lansing is among the best in the nation.

Thanks, @MSU_Football for today’s nugget – keep ’em coming and we’ll keep putting the nuggets into even great perspective.
