Dave Brandon - A Pictorial Tribute

SpartansWire appreciated the hard work, skill, and moral superiority Dave Brandon demonstrated during his years as athletic director for UMAA.  Today, we pay tribute to his service respectfully.

Enjoy a stroll through a pictorial homage to Dave Brandon, a man who showed class and dignity as the steward of UMAA’s proud athletic department for a period of time.

After Brandon’s tenure as UMAA athletic director came to a premature close, he directed the business of Toys R Us for another period of time that led to the company’s filing for bankruptcy.

On May 14th, Brandon resigned as CEO of Toys R Us after earning $11.25 million (U.S.) in compensation in calendar year 2017.

As he contemplates his next adventure, we hope he understands our appreciation for the contributions he made to the college athletic landscape, to the Michigan State vs UMAA rivalry, to the hopes and dreams of UMAA’s student athletes, to the hopes and dreams of boys and girls around the world with a love of toys, and to the altruistic dynamic that makes corporate America the bastion of optimism and promise it continues to be.

A good listener, here he is concentrating on understanding what the actual words are that are being spoken.

With his trademark excitement and charisma, he unveils the wider aisles designed to create a better shopping experience at the Blytheville, Arkansas Toys R Us location.

While sporting a smart sweater, he discusses some of the possible options for new shapes of pizzas: isosceles triangle-shaped pizzas, trapezoid-shaped pizzas, figure-eight-crafted pizzas, scalene-triangle-shaped pizzas, and the like.  Ultimately, Brandon and his team chose to stick with the more traditional circle-shaped pizzas (while dipping their toes in the progressive waters by having select pizzas prepared and delivered in square-shapes).

He was always connecting with the “every-person” and he always sought to have his finger on the pulse of what was happening among the proletariat.

He was proud of his pencil collection (and with good reason as he had some terrific pencils).

Even when times were tough, he was quick to share cooking recipes, offer suggestions for new local eateries, or extend an invitation to his home for a backyard barbecue of a kill from a recent African hunt.

For as hard as he worked, he always showed a prioritization of a work-life balance.  Here, he takes a break from the grind to enjoy some cotton candy with a colleague.

His quick wit and comedic timing kept everyone on their toes and Coach Rodriguez still happily and wistfully refers to the times when he’d be appreciative of Brandon’s efforts to introduce levity into situations when necessary.

His genuine humility prevented him from garnering a higher public profile since he insisted that the coaches and players be in the limelight – but, from time to time, he’d acquiesce and grant an interview to a student intern looking to gain some experience from a sit-down reveal.

Asking Coach Rodriguez if it’d be okay if he (Brandon) could call the offensive plays for that day’s contest against Iowa.
