Kiva Tradition A Proud One On MSU Campus - Which Is Best?

Michigan State University’s impressive array of kivas presents Spartans with an important choice that must be made – which campus kiva is best?

The actual definition of “kiva” is as follows:

A chamber, built wholly or partly underground, used by male Pueblo Indians for religious rites.

I’m unfamiliar with traditions related to the Pueblo and how they may be ingrained in Michigan State University’s history and overall DNA – but the university has offered a tip of the cap to the Pueblo with the campus kivas and the value they provide to the student body, the faculty, and campus ethos.

I do not recall the specific academic offerings that I experienced within these kivas but I do recall being inside of the kivas for the purposes of academic pursuit as an undergraduate student.

I have a fairly clear recollection of walking through one of the kivas while a class was being conducted as I was trying to avoid inclement weather elements during a campus walk one afternoon.

Maureen McCabe Nowak (Michigan State, Class of 1993) always had a special appreciation for the Wonders Kiva due to the artwork that adorned the walls as well as the color scheme of the floor carpeting.

Meanwhile, in a show of Michigan State’s diversity, George Stroker (Michigan State, Class of 1988) still prefers to favor Erickson Kiva because of its exterior dome’s pale green color and corrugated texture.

Over the decades, the debate has raged on among Spartans – which of these kivas is the “best’ kiva?

I’m not in any position of authority that would allow me to simply “pronounce” the “best” kiva.  I wouldn’t ever presume to have the sort of wisdom and/or experience to take a position, one way or another.

But, what I can do is present the question to you, readers of SpartansWire:

Which Michigan State kiva is the “best” Michigan State kiva?

Let me know.

I’ll then let the world know once I’ve captured and analyzed the thoughts from all of you.

If you need a refresher on the various components and elements – both interior and exterior – that make up the kivas, please dig in and enjoy an inspirational pictorial of the kivas that contribute to the beauty of the Michigan State campus.
