Bill Bender of The Sporting News demonstrates journalistic excellence by recognizing Spartan field general as one the nation’s best quarterbacks.

The question remains – does Bill Bender of The Sporting News know how to properly pronounce Brian Lewerke’s last name?

Bill Bender of The Sporting News has jumped onto the Michigan State bandwagon with the way he has included Lewerke in his ranking of the Top 25 quarterbacks across the college football landscape.

And Bill Bender doesn’t drop Lewerke into the rankings in perfunctory fashion.

Could it be that I’m interpreting Bill Bender’s ranking of Lewerke incorrectly?

Bill Bender has announced to the world that he believes Brian Lewerke is the #8 quarterback in the nation.

And when Bill Bender talks, people listen.

Bill Bender’s write up within the section that features Lewerke as the 8th best quarterback in the nation is just vague enough to make one wonder if Bill Bender has ever watched Lewerke play football.

But Bill Bender’s write up also contains just enough “statistics” that he found on a casual internet search as his deadline neared to suggest that he didn’t pull Lewerke’s name out of a fedora.

Bill Bender also makes the obligatory reference to the “offseason distractions” to illustrate that he’s smart and worldly and knowledgable about sports things that have been discussed by people other than sports people.

The thing I like about Bill Bender’s write up that puts Brian Lewerke at the #8 spot among all college football quarterbacks is his announcement that Lewereke will “keep the Spartans in the hunt in the Big Ten East.”

Bill Bender steps out with that proclamation.

Bravo, Bill Bender.

BILL BENDER’S BRIAN LEWERKE WRITE UP

#8 – Brian Lewerke, Michigan State

Lewerke might be the best all-around quarterback Mark Dantonio has ever had. He took control of the starting job last season and led the Spartans to a 10-win season, all the more impressive considering their offseason distractions and 3-9 record just a year prior.

He’s an efficient passer who totaled 2,793 yards and 20 touchdowns to seven interceptions last season while adding 559 yards and five rushing touchdowns on top of that. He’ll keep the Spartans in the hunt in the Big Ten East.
