Jake Hartbarger Is NFL-Ready

Spartan veteran is next up in a long line of Michigan State punters who have excelled in the Green & White – and Hartbarger will be kicking on Sundays after his senior year.

George Perles used to say that the most important play in a football game is the punt.

George Perles also used to say that the best meal of the day was the post-dinner bowl of spaghetti and meatballs followed by the post-dinner post-desert of a banana split with a post-dinner tumbler of warm gin.

Still, Perles knew a thing or two about coaching and while he might not have been spot-on with his view of the importance of the punt, he was in the ball park with that perspective.

When a team emphasizes ball possession and focuses on crushing an opponent’s will over the course of four quarters, the role of the punter is not perfunctory.

Michigan State has had its share of guys who have boomed the hell out of the ball.

Brandon Fields and Craig Jarrett both earned their way into the NFL after stellar careers as Spartan punters.

Jake Hartbarger appears to be a lock for a Sunday paycheck after he establishes himself as one of the nation’s top punters in the 2018 season ahead.

Let’s take a quick look at the kid’s numbers through three seasons:

  • Currently ranks 8th all time on Michigan State’s career average yards per punt at 41.89.
  • Currently ranks 11th all time in Michigan State in both punting yards (7540) and punts (180).
  • On two separate occasions, he’s pinned four punts inside the 20-yard line twice (against Maryland both times on 11/14/15 and 10/22/16).
  • Has four punts of 60+ yards.
  • Is a three time Academic All Big Ten selection.
  • Has a groovy vibe.

Hartbarger is a weapon in Mark Dantonio’s system and it says here that he’ll earn All Big Ten honors after the 2018 season concludes.

It also says here that Hartbarger will kick the ball for NFL teams for a long while in the years ahead.

It also says here that George Perles also really liked enjoying a well-prepared pot roast, a warm serving of kugelis, a hearty plate of kishka, a tall jar of a kvass, and a plate filled with properly sliced skilandis.

As for Hartbarger –

Take a look at a couple of nifty videos that show the athlete and the man.

This first video has an underbed of music that makes one want to get a Far Eastern groove on.

The second video showcases none other than the one and only Hondo with yet another rock solid interview.  Let’s give Hondo props for two specific elements of this interview:

First – his reveal that Hartbarger was named “Hottest College Football Player” by “some girl magazine.”

Second – his use of the familiar term “bro” throughout the exclusive sit down.

Final observation of the interview Hondo conducts with Hartbarger – kudos to Michigan State University for having the EXIT signs inside of Spartan Stadium illuminated with green lighting rather than the traditional red lighting.  Just hope that’s all cool with the Ingham County fire coding norms and rules.

Post-script observation of Hondo’s interview with Hartbarger – Hartbarger might be wondering throughout the interview if Hondo lives with his mother.
