The Los Angeles Rams select Brian Allen in the fourth round of the NFL Draft, extending Michigan State’s incredible streak.
Brian Allen is about as good of an example of what it means to be a Spartan as any other player that has come through the proud Michigan State football program.
His contributions to Spartan football speak for themselves –
- Four year letter winner that played in 51 games over his four years as a Spartan.
- 2017 team captain.
- Second team All Big Ten for three straight years (2015-2017)
- Three time academic All Big Ten honoree
- Part of Spartan family royalty by helping to establish the Allens as deserving Bullough-esque status.
- Anchor of 2015 Big Ten Championship and College Football Playoff team.
- Leader of team that achieved remarkable 2017 turnaround with 10-3 season, Holiday Bowl victory, re-establishment of Spartan program’s foundational elements.
And now we can add yet another bullet to this warrior’s bio –
- 2018 NFL Draft selection.
The Spartan center was chosen as the 111th overall pick when the Los Angeles Rams selected Allen in the fourth round of the NFL Draft.
And now Michigan State can proudly continue to tout it’s amazing streak of players having been selected in what is now 78 consecutive NFL Drafts.
As we pointed out on SpartansWire, there are only two other football programs with such a streak – UMAA (tip of the cap to our non-rivals from SpartansWire) and USC.
I know – we already published the following rip here – but, in tribute to Spartan Warrior, Brian Allen, we’re throwing journalism rules to the wind and re-publishing this (partly because this rip is very tasty and partly because Brian Allen’s achievement calls for special treatment) –
Does the average college football fan out there know that Michigan State is one of only three schools that have had a player selected in each of the last 78 NFL Drafts?
Notre Dame? Nope. But Touchdown Jesus is a really nifty wall drawing.
Ohio State? Nope. But Art Schlichter was crafty when being flushed out of the pocket.
Penn State? Nope. No commentary here since we’re currently living in our own glass house.
Oklahoma? Nope. But Barry Switzer is Barry Switzer.
Florida State? Nope (Florida State was a women’s school for the majority of the relevant timespan).
Alabama? Nope. But things seemed to have worked out okay for these guys.
Texas? Nope. But they can cozy up with UMAA and dream of the good, ole days.
Georgia? Nope. But R.E.M.’s brilliance more than makes up for it.
Miami, FL.? Nope (Miami only fielded a co-educational intramural team for the majority of the relevant timespan).
SpartansWire extends sincere congratulations to Brian Allen and his family.
And SpartansWire will be proud to re-publish the rip above as often as necessary since someone has to make sure that the average dopes out there understand just how much of a badass program exists in East Lansing.
Spartans – this is merely one element of 2018 that is going to give all of us reason to be appropriately confident.
A few other things for Spartans to be confident in – the jukebox at Art’s Bar & Grill, the buckets at Crunchy’s, and the outdoor patio at the Peanut Barrel.
Those of you that are right there along the banks of the Red Cedar on this Spring weekend – see if you can pay each of these joints a visit and raise a glass to Brian Allen.
