Mike Sadler - One of Michigan State's Finest Spartans

Lansing Lugnuts to pay tribute to one of the all time greatest Spartans on May 3rd…

Any Spartan fan worth his/her weight in Red Cedar River water knows what Mike Sadler meant and will forever mean to Michigan State.

Sadler – who tragically died in a car accident back in 2016 – was so much more than a phenomenal punter for the Spartans.

He was a bright light for the entire program and he showed a true Spartan spirit with his commitment to the fundamentals of what Mark Dantonio was building; he demonstrated wit, humor, and love for the entire Spartan family through his social media offerings; he made his own family proud by being the best person he could be; and he was a hell of a good punter – and overall football player.

The Lansing Lugnuts will be paying tribute to Sadler with a special fundraiser to be held on May 3rd by handing out a commemorative Green & White #3 Sadler jersey to the first 1000 fans who arrive for the Lugnuts ball game that day in Lansing.

All proceeds from the day’s sales of “Hey Diddle Diddle” craft beer will go to the Sadler Foundation.

There will also be a silent auction as well as a “pass the hat” fundraiser at the ball park.

The Sadler Foundation raises money to support programs that stress academic excellence, athletic achievement, and strength of character and leadership.

More information regarding the event on May 3rd can be found in the link to Tony Paul’s piece in The Detroit News.

Sadler probably didn’t realize just how much of an impact he had on Spartan fans all over the nation.

Consider this homemade menu board that was in my house just a few miles from the Rose Bowl when I hosted several hundred of my closest Spartan friends in La Canada, California on December 31st, 2013, the night before Sadler and his teammates would go on to win the Rose Bowl in dramatic fashion over Stanford to cap off one of the greatest seasons in Michigan State history –

The Caesar Sadler was as popular as any other item on that grand menu.

And let’s not ever forget how and where the brand name of the “Hey Diddle Diddle” craft beer came from in the first place.

With Michigan State looking to put the nail in the coffin against the Cornhuskers in Lincoln deep into that magical 2013 Big Ten Championship and Rose Bowl Championship season, Coach D dialed up one of his more brilliant trick plays.

Instead of Sadler holding the ball cleanly for kicker Dan Conroy, Sadler takes the snap and bolts forward for a big first down that keeps State’s drive – and the clock – moving along in what wound up being a massive win in Lincoln for the Spartans.

After the game, Mark Dantonio was asked if that fake field goal had a fun name.

Dantonio’s response was deadpan: “Hey Diddle Diddle.”

After a brief pause, some reporter asked, “What does that mean?”

Again, deadpan, Dantonio replied, “Sadler up the middle.”

The room of reporters burst into laughter.

It’s worth repeating –

Any Spartan fan worth his/her weight in Red Cedar River water knows what Mike Sadler meant and will forever mean to Michigan State.

Enjoy this terrific clip of highlights featuring Mike Sadler’s finest moments on the field – including the play that was called “Hey Diddle Diddle.”

Mike Sadler – Michigan State will never forget you and we’ll always be grateful for everything you did to make the Spartan Nation proud….
