77 Straight Years of Spartans Going In The Draft

There have been 77 consecutive NFL Drafts that have included a Spartan being selected.  That streak may be in jeopardy.

Does the average college football fan out there know that Michigan State has had a Spartan selected in the NFL Draft in each of the last 77 NFL Drafts?

Does the average college football fan out there know that there are only two college football programs that have longer such streaks (UMAA and USC have had a player selected in 79 consecutive drafts)?

Since the NFL-AFL merger, there have been 51 NFL Drafts that have taken place.

Does the average college football fan out there know that Michigan State is one of only five schools (Florida, Nebraska, UMAA, and USC are the others) that have had a player selected in each of those 51 NFL Drafts?

Notre Dame?  Nope.  But Touchdown Jesus is a really nifty wall drawing.

Ohio State?  Nope.  But Art Schlichter was crafty when being flushed out of the pocket.

Penn State?  Nope.  No commentary here since we’re currently living in our own glass house.

Oklahoma?  Nope.  But Barry Switzer is Barry Switzer.

Florida State?  Nope (Florida State was a women’s school for the majority of the relevant timespan).

Alabama?  Nope.  But things seemed to have worked out okay for these guys.

Texas?  Nope.  But they can cozy up with UMAA and dream of the good, ole days.

Georgia?  Nope.  But R.E.M.’s brilliance more than makes up for it.

Miami, FL.?  Nope (Miami only fielded a co-educational intramural team for the majority of the relevant timespan).

The average fans out there – they simply don’t do their homework, they think “historical” means before Instagram, they don’t know that universities fielded football squads before Bleacher Report started publishing those things where you click through a bunch of photos of scantily-clad cheerleaders accompanied by very, very poorly written “stuff,” and they don’t appreciate that Michigan State has earned its place in college football’s hierarchy.

Check out Matt Wenzel’s nice piece on MLive.com that addresses how Michigan State’s streak likely depends on whether or not an NFL team sees that Brian Allen has a ten year career ahead of him.
