With the graduation of workhorse Gerald Holmes and the transfer of Madre London, the Spartans will look to sophomore-to-be Connor Heyward this coming Fall to help keep the offense powerful and versatile.

Heyward showed flashes of potential – and even greatness – last season.

With the bulk of the carries slated to go to wrecking machine LJ Scott this season, Heyward will need to step up his game and be available to gain tough yards, be a viable option out of the backfield in passing situations, and contribute to the return game.

Brian Lewerke is confident that Heyward will rise up and add to an offense that already packs a a variety of punches –

And while it’s obvious that Heyward will need to provide LJ Scott with relief and produce in the process of doing just that, Heyward also appears ready to improve the Spartans return game.

It’s been a while since Michigan State posed any sort of real threat from a kickoff or punt return man.

Keshawn Martin always gave us the sense that a long return was possible.

Perhaps Heyward can add yet another element to the Spartans’ ability to keep defenses and opposing special teams on their toes.

Here, it sounds like Heyward himself understands what sort of opportunity is in front of him.  And this kid appears to be a good dude – yet another good example of how the chemistry and overall DNA of the program has gotten back to its original roots and is filled with team players who are committed to The Dantonio Way….
