Ohio State head coach Earle Bruce died Friday morning at age 87. Mark Dantonio served as an assistant under Bruce for two years at Ohio State in 1984 and 1984 took to Twitter with his thoughts …

Bruce went 86-26-1 during his nine years as the Buckeye head man, going 6-1 against the Spartans. He started out with a 42-0 win in 1979, and lost to MSU 13-7 in Columbus in his final season.

Michigan State has always had – and always will have – rivalries with schools that pretend that the rivalry isn’t real.

There are efforts – extreme and humorous – made by Michigan State’s chief rivals to act as if the rivalry isn’t a rivalry and that the matchups don’t really even matter.

This is an odd way for any school to view a rivalry that the entire nation recognizes as being intense and heated and real.

I refer to all of this for the purposes of being able to point to the rivalry between Michigan State and Ohio State.

It exists.

And it’s intensified ever since Mark Dantonio started posting dramatic and historically memorable wins over the Buckeyes.

Most Buckeyes would acknowledge – perhaps a bit reluctantly – that even with last season’s 48-3 pasting in Columbus, they see the game with Michigan State on the schedule and they don’t view it in the way they might have viewed in when John L Smith or Bobby Williams was the head Spartan.

Coach D and Urban Meyer have duked it out – but the two schools have a respect for the way each approaches the game, the way each team comes to play, and the way the two schools might even be kindred spirits.

Mark Dantonio viewed Earle Bruce as a mentor and a guy he’d like to emulate in many ways.

I’m sure Coach Bruce’s passing leaves Coach D’s heart heavy today.

But, in the same way that there will always be an authentic and deep connection between Mark Dantonio and former Buckeyes national championship head coach Jim Tressel, Dantonio and the Spartans have a connection with The Earle Bruce Era in Columbus and it isn’t just Coach D who wants to pay tribute to the man.

Coach Bruce – kick your feet up and be proud of a job well done.  I’m sure you and Woody are having a laugh together, maybe even going through film in Woody’s customized coaches’ room upstairs.

And I promise you that any time a Spartan sees a man in a fedora, that Spartan immediately thinks of this –
