Loyola vs UMAA - Final Four GAME PREVIEW

Loyola vs UMAA Final Four matchup is chock-full of Sullivan Family history….

I said this to my 11-year old son this morning:

“The chances are very high that you are the only person in this nation that can state, unequivocally, that you have a grandfather that played basketball for one Final Four team and that Final Four team is playing against a school that your great grandfather graduated from in 1931.”

When UMAA squares off against Sister Jean and Karma this evening at The Alamodome in San Antonio in one of the more captivating Final Four matchups in memory, the Sullivan Family can’t help but stop and think about how much family history there is baked into this game that will have the nation’s attention.

Robert Francis Sullivan – Papa Sullivan as he was known – had some very basic fundamental tenets that formed the foundation upon which he built his life: The Sullivan Family; The Chicago Board of Trade; Early Times at 5p Sharp; and, yes, the Loyola Ramblers.

My grandfather proudly watched his son, Robert Crowley Sullivan, Sr – Poppy Sullivan, as he’s known now – eschew the ordinary Chicago Catholic approach for a high school basketball star from Fenwick High School that would lead to the typical commitment to Notre Dame, Marquette, Dayton, LaSalle, and the other boring standards and, instead, choose……..the University of Michigan.

Never was Papa Sullivan faced with the conundrum of seeing his son do battle with his own Loyola Ramblers.

Never did Papa Sullivan even daydream about the possibility that his son’s university would square off against his own Loyola Ramblers in………..the Final Four.

Family lore points to the night when everyone gathered around a television to take in the DELAYED BROADCAST of the 1963 NCAA National Championship Game – and that the only one who didn’t understand that the broadcast was DELAYED and that the result of the game had been determined hours earlier was the proud Rambler, Robert Francis Sullivan.

Papa Sullivan paced and fretted – and the family did its best to keep their laughs and chuckles muffled, knowing that all would be happy and the Early Times would carry a special kick later in the evening.

Later today, the entire Sullivan Family – across all parts of the country – will all be thinking the same thing:

Wouldn’t it be the treat of all treats to sit and watch today’s UMAA vs Loyola Final Four matchup with the patriarchs of the Sullivan Family – the proud 1931 graduate of Loyola University, Papa Sullivan, and the proud 1958 UMAAer, Poppy Sullivan??

We all know that Papa is up there smiling – and, sorry, Poppy, but there’s too much Green & White in the family all these years later and there’s too much nostalgic love and respect for Papa In The Sky.

We all have the Early Times at the ready…..

RAMBLERS – 76

UMAA – 69
