First Round Observations - Arizona

MACtion is alive and well as Buffalo opens up a can on Sean Miller’s Arizona Wildcats to advance to the Second Round.

I’m sure the Arizona Moon Howlers are blaming Mark Schlabach and the FBI and everyone behind the scenes at ESPN that has dared to allow Mark Schlabach to report on various dynamics related to the University of Arizona’s basketball program.

But here’s the reality: 13th seeded Buffalo out-hustled, out-shot, out-rebounded, out-toughed, out-played, and out-coached 4th seeded Arizona all game long in last night’s First Round contest in Boise and the final score (89-68) didn’t even properly represent just how much the Wildcats were out-classed.

And as much as Arizona fans will want to point to “distractions,” here’s another harsh reality: Sean Miller might be the most overrated coach in all of college basketball.

Since taking over a program nine years ago that’s as overrated as its coach, Miller has loaded up his roster with truck loads of talent.

His recruiting prowess sure does speak for itself…

By my count, Miller has sent nine of his players to the NBA.

He’s been mentioned – regularly – as one of the best coaches to not reach the Final Four.

It’s time for that to no longer be a consideration.

Last night’s shortfall to the Buffalo Bulls of the MAC makes it two of the last three years in which Arizona has been bumped in the First Round.

He’s won five Pac 12 Championships – and this is to be commended.

But at what point is it fair to at least suggest that Miller might not be the coach that some want to believe he is?

I’d say that when a coach has been somewhere for nine years and has come up with eight or nine different ways to not reach the Final Four, it’s worth considering that the alleged wiretaps aren’t the only things to be concerned about in Tucson.

And Arizona fans might want to quietly be thankful that their football program is irrelevant – otherwise, there would have been far more attention paid to the disastrous conclusion to this guy’s tenure:
