Sunday Scribbles - Spring Football

Look away from the Big Ten Tournament Championship Game and spend several hours day dreaming about what’s to come this Fall…

While trying to move on from the bitter loss to UMAA in Saturday’s Big Ten Tournament Semifinals, let’s take a peek at some topics that warrant some focus with Spring Football Practice here:

  1. No matter what the ramifications are of the way in which UMAA stuck it to the Spartans twice this season on the hardwood, nothing is going to change the fact that all UMAAers wake up at least five nights a week in cold sweats due to nightmares featuring Mark Dantonio’s face.
  2. Brian Lewerke may not be a September Heisman Trophy Winner like Denard Robinsin this Fall – but Lewerke is going to throw for 3000 yards and more than 20 touchdowns to go along with rushing for more than 750 yards and 10 touchdowns this coming Fall en route to another phenomenal season for Dantonio’s program.  Much more to come about how we’ll quantify the “phenomenal” season in the days and weeks ahead.
  3. Joe Bachie might not be named an All American when the 2018 season concludes this Fall – but he’ll deserve the status nevertheless.  And every program in the Big Ten will wonder how in the hell they missed out on the recruitment of this animal.
  4. Behind a group of focused maniacs that will become the best offensive line of the Dantonio Era, LJ Scott will rush for more than 1200 yards this season and will fumble the football a grand total of two times over the course of the 12-game regular season.
  5. The intensity of the day in East Lansing on October 20th will surpass that of the intensity of any other Saturday over the last thirty years. UMAA’s head coach will behave like a child by falling down onto the surface of the field numerous times in reaction to holding calls.  UMAA’s head coach will be punch drunk by the time the 4th quarter of the game begins.  UMAA’s head coach will be responsible for at least three Delay Of Game penalties since it’s, of course, challenging to be organized and calm while a football game is taking place in front of a lot of people who are yelling a lot and causing distractions.  On the opposite sideline, Mark Dantonio will, as usual, demonstrate every tangible and intangible example of calm, focused, tough, smart, and determined leadership throughout every moment of the contest.  The contrasts from sideline to sideline will, once again, be comparable to the contrasts between Daniel Day Lewis and Andy Dick.
  6. By the time Saturday, October 20th transitions to Sunday, October 21st, Spartans all over will be proudly celebrating, yet again, the greatness of Mark Dantonio’s ability to know what is most important.
  7. On Saturday, November 10th, I would not want to be any of the various quarterbacks on the Ohio State Buckeyes roster.  I also would not want to be any member of the Ohio State defense.  And I especially would not want to be a person who suffers from esophageal spasms brought on by stress and humiliation.
  8. Mike Tressel will shine in taking over sole responsibility as the Defensive Coordinator.  His defense will be among the nation’s Top 5 defensive units statistically – but it will be the “eye test” that makes everyone recognize that the 2018 Spartan Defense will be the best of the Dantonio Era.
  9. With more options than the 1989 Brody Cafeteria Sunday morning breakfast buffet, Dave Warner will become everyone’s favorite Offensive Coordinator as he pulls all of the right strings.
  10. In what will be one of the most intense, exciting, and important seasons in the history of Michigan State Football, the Spartans will never be out of the various versions of the national Top 10 rankings.  And when the CFP kicks off its own rankings, it will be understood by all that State is on a collision course with the College Football Playoff.
